Truck drivers counselled on defensive driving Local truck drivers have been reminded of the importance of taking precautionary measures while driving to avoid accidents which have been killing many Tanzanians annually. The training aimed at enabling the drivers to improve driving skills while on the road and to reduce the number of accidents which have been killing many people and causing thousands injuries. For his part, Afrexa International chief executive officer Martin Gabone said more than 450 drivers have graduated since the programme started three years ago. Kubo mentioned several of the major causes of accidents, including lack of time, chance to attend what he is required to do while in a car or giving attention to things which does not relate to driving. One of the graduates identified as Hamis Hassan commended the company for supporting them. Gabone explained that his organisation have been recruiting competent drivers and provide them with regular training before searching for reliable contract in order to make the driving field more respected as others. Other causes, he said, are changing speed of trucks disregarding the environment and health problems. He said another cause was lack of training as some drivers used their experience to drive, instead of attending training. "What has been completed by this company has changed the minds of many people that driving can be practiced by anyone while in actual fact that's not true," he said. "Almost all drivers are working in our company, where as 140 of they have been employed on permanent basis in other companies, while 109 have been employed by a mobile telephone operator Tigo," he said. He urged drivers to fasten their seat belts while on journey, no matter what the distance traveled since research shows that belts have helped many drivers save their lives when mishaps occur. He urged fellow drivers to inculcate the culture of attending various driving courses, which to sharpen their skills and improve defensive driving.
