Student driver goes on wild ride, rams into side of high school building

A young driver had a wild ride Sunday morning, April 1, at the Clarinda High School when the vehicle she was driving struck an exterior wall and a steel emergency door on the north side of the school.

"There are also some corner cracks that we're going to have checked out," Superintendent Paul Honnold said. Sunday.

The damage to the steel door at the high school was estimated at $1,000.

She then panicked and applied the accelerator even harder, causing the vehicle to jump a curb and cross the sidewalk.

Eshelman was driving a 1998 Ford Escort that was initially parked in the north parking lot of the high school facing east.

Neither Eshelman nor her mother, who was a passenger in the car, was injured in the incident. Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers said Amanda Eshelman, 20, of Clarinda holds an instruction permit and was receiving driving lessons from her mother, Karen Eshelman, when the accident occurred.
