First time drivers can save money too

Such is the exorbitant cost of motor insurance for young, first-time drivers, particularly men, many of them will opt to insure a car on their parents' policy.

Not John O'Rourke (18), from Santry, Co Dublin. "I wanted to get insurance in my own name as I wanted to begin earning my own no claims bonus, that will make my insurance cheaper each year."

Quite a saving, but part of the reason for the lower price was a discount for drivers who complete their course of driving lessons with a First Ireland-insured driving instructor.

The discount package, called DRIVEFirst, includes a one-year introductory no claims discount -- without needing any prior driving experience -- and up to 20pc off standard policy rates.
