Driving lesson fees may go up soon

Hinting this to The Borneo Post yesterday, Institut Memandu Wawasan Sibu Sdn Bhd general manager Peter Loh Koon Ting said the hike in the fee was inevitable, as they could no longer absorb the escalating cost of repairs and maintenance, including costlier spare parts. Despite these challenges, we had absorbed the costs and maintain the fee all this while. He also mentioned that they had not revised their fee since their inception years ago. He added: "The costlier spare parts and accessories such as tyres have compelled us to up the fee. " He said a learner is necessary to carry out nine-and-a-half hours of practical session. "Currently, they are paying about RM400 for the learner's fee, excluding course fee (law and theory among others). Currently, we can't reveal much as we are still in discussion over the matter," Loh clarified. We need to change brakes and clutches every eight months compared to 12 a long time for normal usage. The rate of wear and tear is higher compared to normal use. "Prices of fuel hiked several times over the years while spare parts are coming with higher price tags. "It is only the learner's fee that is affected. By learner's fee, I mean where leaner drivers are given practical lessons on how to drive. In total, it would take a learner about two a long time to complete the entire course until he obtains the 'P' licence, he added.
